Gilded Cage by Vic James

February 2017

GILDED CAGE is such a unique story, revolving around the fate of a “servant” family (in a world where all Muggle types must serve the magic-wielding upper classes for 10 years) and the machinations of a powerful (in terms of wealth AND magic) group of aristocrats. The modern-day almost-Britain setting makes for a refreshing change from the otherworld locales of many fantasy novels. Eagerly awaiting the sequel!

Empress of a Thousand Skies by Rhoda Belleza

February 2017

I was so lucky to read an ARC of this amazing space epic–and EPIC is truly the most appropriate word here. This is Game of Thrones meets Star Wars-level epicness, paired with vivid writing and a diverse cast. I love multiple-POV books, and Rhee and Aly are two of my favourite characters ever (especially Aly!)–strong but wholly believable. Need. Next book. Now.

Toward a Secret Sky by Heather Maclean

April 2017

I enjoyed this so much. It has just the right combination of magic, intrigue, and romance, and the beautiful Scottish backdrop and descriptions of various ancient sites just made it all the more appealing. The characters are strong–complex yet still likeable–particularly Maren’s grandparents and Gavin (Gavin was my favourite…). Can’t wait to read Heather’s next book.
